Marriage is a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union, often formalized via a wedding ceremony, may also be called matrimony. People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment. Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, yet almost every known society has had some form of marriage between a man and a woman. In some societies an individual is limited to being in one such couple at a time (monogamy), while other cultures allow a male to have more than one wife (polygyny) or, less commonly, a female to have more than one husband (polyandry). Some societies also allow marriage between two males or two females. Societies frequently have other restrictions on marriage based on the ages of the participants, pre-existing kinship, and membership in religious or other social groups. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage, and forbid incestuous marriages. In cultures that allow the dissolution of a marriage this is known as divorce. Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it. Most people I know do something that could be along the lines of cheating. Or maybe I have high expectations? Most people I know in long-term relationships still go out to social places to meet the opposite sex or the same sex. It seems like nowadays most people who are in marriages and relationships act like they are single and are still looking around for easy sex. It needs communication, trust, respect and compromise to make the relationship work. Cheating and playing around are just trials or temptation that married person goes through and can be fixed for a period of time when you have those qualities that I mentioned. Answered by unknown - Fri Apr 23 11:34:19 2010 Would arranged marriages be better than the current system of choosing mates? Q. Would Arranged Marriages be better than the current system of choosing mates? Given the large number of failed marriages, which is economically wasteful and generally harmful to the emotional well-being of the growing children? There are still quite a few countries in which marriages are to some degree arranged. In those countries, a 15-year old child is more likely to be living with parents who love, honor and respect each other, than in the USA. In cultures with arranged marriages, couples start out as complete strangers, and grow to love each other. In our culture, couples who start out with little more than sexual attraction, and grow to hate each other. Asked by Secret Asian Man - Thu Jun 10 10:07:49 2010 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. The reason why arranged marriages work better than marriages in the states has nothing to do with people choosing a partner... It has more to do with the cultures morals... In the USA we are taught that anything happens... get a divorce and in cultures were marriages are arranged you are married till death... if the man cheats you are married if the woman has an affair you are still married... also women tend to have less rights than men... so maybe she would be dead instead... of getting a divorce... choices also give you less morals... as very few people in the USA actually value the meaning of marriage... :) Answered by Jijji - Thu Jun 10 10:15:02 2010 Why do some people think that children should be shielded from gay marriages?
Q. So if children think that same-sex marriages are legal, they'll become gay as well? Even if same-sex marriages are illegal, kids will still be exposed to alternative lifestyles, and will grow up and be gay, if they're gay. Asked by brandon c - Tue Nov 11 07:19:02 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, your suppositions are correct. Children emulate the behavior of adults. Many adults fear the embarrassment and disappointment of their children being gay (mind you, these feelings are more dictated by socialization, it's not inborn...) By NOT exposing them to gay marriage and gays altogether, adults think they can PREVENT the naturally-born gay child from realizing their homosexual self-actualization. Which is a pointless (and inhumane) exercise. Pressuring children to become something they're not, especially when all signs point to the contrary, only produced a confused, self-loathing and mentally messed-up child and a subsequently messed-up adult.
