Civil marriage history

Civil marriages were first recognized by Western countries during the 17th century, and today are almost universally accepted. Every country maintaining a population registry of its residents keeps track of marital status, and most countries believe that it is their responsibility to register married couples. Most countries define the conditions of civil marriage separately from religious requirements. Certain countries, such as Israel, only allow couples to register on the condition that they have first been married in a religious ceremony recognized by the state, or were married in a different country.

Is there any religions that practice arranged gay marriage/civil partnerships?
Q. Many religions, esp in Asia, practice arranged marriages where the parents decide who their sons and daughters will marry. What about gay marriage or civil partnerships where these are legal in the world. Would the same parents expect to arrange their gay son or lesbain daughter's relations, or do they just leave them to it?
Asked by Astrotrain - Thu Apr 9 14:16:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Speaking strictly hypothetically, of course, if such unions were socially acceptable, I'm sure that the parents would be just as involved. The general theory is that arranged marriages are meant to strengthen alliances between families, solidify business contracts or it is just simply believed that young people don't know how to chose a "good" partner (stable, employed, respectible, etc.)

Do Civil Unions in CA have the same rights as marriage as provided by FEDERAL government?
Q. No I don't want info about state recognition, I'm aware that state extends virtually all the same rights to both Civil Unions and Marriage. I want to know if Civil unions get the same rights provided for marriage by the Federal government if marriage gets Federal recognition and rights. I don't want anyone to try and change my mind because that's beyond the question and useless, I just want straight up answers with a source. What are some rights of hetero-couples provided by federal government?

A. As already stated, no, the federal government does not recognize gay marriage/civil unions (due to the Defense Of Marriage Act), regardless of state recognition. That means they can t file joint federal tax returns, they can t collect social security survivor benefits if/when their partner dies, etc.

What is the difference between civil union and gay marriage?
Q. Civil unions are legal in most places and give the partners the same rights as married couples get; ie insurance benefits, next of kin issues, etc. If a gay couple is allowed a civil union why is it so important that they allow gay marriage? Isn't civil union basically the same thing?
Asked by Elizabeth K - Sat Nov 29 02:13:29 2008 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It seems like they are pretty much the same thing using different words. Gay marriage isn't a case of people wanting equal rights, they seem to want special rights.
