Civil marriage historyCivil marriages were first recognized by Western countries during the 17th century, and today are almost universally accepted. Civil unions are legal in most places and give the partners the same rights as married couples get; ie insurance benefits, next of kin issues, etc. If a gay couple is allowed a civil union why is it so important that they allow gay marriage?
