Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the marital structure created is known as wedlock.

People marry for many reasons, most often including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of love.

Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, may take many forms, and are often formalized by a ceremony called a wedding. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage.

External recognition can manifest in a variety of ways. Some examples include the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

Why do some believe that legalizing gay marriage would lead to marriage to animals and relatives?
Q. After all, gay marriage would take place between two consenting adults, and a dog, cat, or horse would never be able to give its consent. Also, there are laws on the books against marrying relatives, thanks to concerns about inbreeding. Unlike incest, at least gay marriage wouldn't lead to birth defects!

A. It's just the old slippery slope nonsense that never comes to pass. The same things were heard back when people objected to interracial marriage. Can you imagine being so racist that you would say if whites married blacks they would soon want to marry animals? It was said back then, and by my racist great-grandfather by all family accounts. All this b.s. is proven to be nonsense if we look at Massachusetts. Gays have been getting married there for over 5 years. No one wanting to marry their animals, or their brother or sister, and there has been no decline in the number of heterosexuals applying for marriage certificates (so much for ruining the 'sanctity' of marriage). Some people just aren't too bright, and I guess that's enough… [cont.]

What were the dynamics of marriage in the 19th century?
Q. I know that women had few legal rights but what kind of unofficial roles did women and men have in marriage. Did women really obey their husbands? Did husbands really command their wives? Was it very different from modern marriages or essentially similar?

A. I've had the interesting experience of knowing some Middle Eastern Muslims from Lebanon. Now remember, this culture, supposedly the women are second class citizens, etc., and it looks that way in public for the most part. However, back at home, the woman is boss. I think that no matter what the "official" legal and/or cultural rights assigned to women are, they have, throughout history, known how to control their men, by either nagging, cutting them off from sex, giving them bad food, etc. I think that the truth is, in this "enlightened feminist age" more women are abused by men, than they were back then, and this is especially true in inner cities, where the family unit has been devalued by the welfare check, so men and women no longer… [cont.]

What encourages people to wait until marriage to have sex?
Q. There are plenty of people who decide to wait to have sex with their partners until marriage and I just don't understand the reasons. If people are in a close-caring relationship, what is the point of waiting until after you have made a strong commitment, such as marriage, to express it?
