Marriage is a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union, often formalized via a wedding ceremony, may also be called matrimony.

People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment.

Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, yet almost every known society has had some form of marriage between a man and a woman. In some societies an individual is limited to being in one such couple at a time (monogamy), while other cultures allow a male to have more than one wife (polygyny) or, less commonly, a female to have more than one husband (polyandry). Some societies also allow marriage between two males or two females. Societies frequently have other restrictions on marriage based on the ages of the participants, pre-existing kinship, and membership in religious or other social groups.

The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage, and forbid incestuous marriages. In cultures that allow the dissolution of a marriage this is known as divorce.

Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

How, when and why did the marriage framework or institution get formed in human society?
Q. In view of Gay and diffrent types of marriages gaining acceptance in may parts of world and with a whole variety of marriages that differ from place to place and among different community sect etc. Wonder what was the root cause or the genuine reason for formation of marriage. Is it fundamental requirement for only two people to live together? Is it some sort of a license? Is it for regulating people in mating? Is it security for delivering babies?

A. The easy answer is: Go read the Bible, the Koran or Al-Qur'an or even all religious documents. Then go research the time frames in which these writings occurred and tie that to the development of civilization and you'll have your answer. It is a very old accepted practice based on religion and procreation and a very logical concept. Just think of all the inbreeding that would have occurred otherwise because there would have been no record of family ties. So yes, in a way it is some sort of regulatory mechanism as well. It even makes sense even if you're an atheist, in the sense that love do play a part and that it is a pact as far as mutual trust, respect and fidelity is concerned. Not that it is worth much in our present society but… [cont.]

What is the Sanctity of Marriage that conservatives are trying to protect?
Q. Statistics show that nearly 50% of all marriages end in divorce (google it). Conservatives most famous argument against gay marriage is that they must protect the sanctity of marriage, homosexuality threatens marriage and families...so if half of those who make lifelong commitments to each other in front of God or a judge are lying their butts off, how is marriage so sanctimonious that it is worth denying people who are in love from getting married simply because it's not traditional?

A. Its a fight over who gets to define the word marriage. For many people marriage is a religious institution. It represents the blessing of God over the union of two people. By allowing it to be used to endorse and sanctify the union of homosexuals, whom they believe to be sinful, it corrupts a holy institution. But for others, marriage is simply a legal designation ordained by the courts to recognize that two people are now forming one family. For both groups, the separation of church and state is the rationale for their objections. Logically, if marriage is a religious matter then any church could define it any way they liked and the US government would have no right to impose on it in any way. But if it is a purely civil designation then… [cont.]
