From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the marital structure created is known as wedlock. People marry for many reasons, most often including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of love. Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, may take many forms, and are often formalized by a ceremony called a wedding. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage. External recognition can manifest in a variety of ways. Some examples include the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it. If the concern over gay marriage is the idea that it will threaten marriage or the family, it would make sense to outlaw the biggest threat there is to families and marriage: divorce. If we outlaw divorce, it should show people how sacred marriage is don t you think? Asked by CuriousObserver - Wed Nov 19 15:06:33 2008 - - 13 Answers - 3 Comments A. It follows the same logic, but good luck getting any of these bigots to understand that. Answered by Ghengis - Wed Nov 19 15:13:34 2008 Is gay marriage the same as legal incest. Say a father and willing daughter or son being able to marry? Q. I recently had someone state to me that if you believe in equality for all, speaking of gay marriage, then you should agree with incest between consenting adults or that makes you a bigot. Any thoughts on this issue. Asked by steveo - Fri Oct 31 22:39:17 2008 - - 16 Answers - 7 Comments A. In gay marriage there are two of the same gender involved. I doubt they can produce children. If they could they'd be millionaires. Plus it's not incest for gays to marry, unless they happened to be closely related as below, and then I doubt they'd be allowed, but that has never come up to the best of my knowledge, but it is an interesting question to put before the ones presiding over the marriage or the courts where gay marriage is allowed, hmmm? In incest, especially a female and a male there is a high risk of children being brought into this world with birth defects. Fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, brothers and sisters, first cousins and even a risk at second cousins. Third cousins may marry. Now not quite off the topic, but .… [cont.] Answered by pushstroke - Fri Oct 31 23:05:13 2008 Can a marriage survive once you start looking at other people?
Q. My marriage is on the rocks he has a temper, we have been together for 4 years but I have just found that I have started to look at other guys and think of them in inappropriate ways, wanting relations with them. We have been separated for a while but I have been thinking of giving him another chance and trying to work the relationship out for our daughter. Will these other feelings go away if our relationship improves? Can it survive? Asked by stargazer76 - Tue Sep 9 15:13:52 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. Yes. Definitely. But you gotta work on it (as you know, I'm sure). Consider counseling, prayer, talking it out.
