Cousin marriage is a marriage between two cousins. In various jurisdictions and cultures, such marriages range from being considered ideal and actively encouraged, to being uncommon but still legal, to being seen as incest and legally prohibited.

Such marriages are often highly stigmatized today in the West, but marriages between first and second cousins nevertheless account for over 10% of marriages worldwide. They are particularly common in the Middle East, where in some nations they account for over half of all marriages.

Cousin marriage has existed in many cultures throughout history. Frequently, only particular kinds of cousin marriage have been allowed, such as between cross cousins. Cousin marriage has also featured prominently in the field of anthropology, notably in alliance theory.

Supporters of accepting or legalizing first-cousin marriage today may view its genetic risk to offspring as small, compare bans on it to anti-miscegenation laws, or view them as discrimination or eugenics. Opponents may view the increased genetic risk as large, possibly when such marriages are repeated over many generations, and focus on their potential lack of social approval.

cousin marriage?
Q. Ok... So I needed an opinion about what you guys think about cousin marriages? I am 16 at th moment and my parents want me engaged to my cousin, that I don't even know? I never talked to him, never met him, and he doesn't even know what I look like. My parents were talking about all this stuff since from when I was about 3. I even had gotten an engagement ring. Need advice what should I do? I've heard that he is 21 years old. I am 16. I have never MET the guy...I am a U.S. Citizen...I have never met the guy, have never gone to Pakistan. they just mean getting engage at 16 and getting married later after i finish high school.

Atheists, what is your opinion on first-cousin marriage?
Q. I do not have any problems with it. I have had contact with people who are married to their cousin and their children are perfectly healthy and the couples themselves are happy with each other. Chances of them having children with defects is one percent more than non-related couples. Any married couple who have a a chance of giving birth to a child with defects should not have children. The foundation of marriage is when two humans are in love with each other, not if they want to have children or not.

A. "Chances of them having children with defects is one percent more than non-related couples." Oh? And your source for that statistic is...? Marriage doesn't have a "foundation" -- it's whatever we decide it is. And frankly, I really don't care if first cousins want to get married or not, as long as they're consenting adults they can do whatever they want to as far as I'm concerned. With our advances in genetics, we can already screen most couples and let them know if there are potential problems (with Tay-Sachs, Sickle Cell Anemia, etc.) -- so they can avoid having children if they want to. Probably won't be long until we could do the same for first cousins. Peace.

Is my cousin-by-marriage's son's half brother, who he just met, my cousin?
Q. I believe my cousin-by-marriage's son is my second-cousin-by-marriage , right? I'm assuming then that his half-brother would be my half-second-cousin-by-mar riage. Does this make sense or are we even technically related at all? Just trying to figure out if I have a new cousin.

A. No. Your cousin by marriage isn't your cousin. He is your cousin-in-law, a term that is fun to say but not real. His son isn't any relation to you. His son's half-brother isn't any relation to you either. Your cousin married a man, call him Alex. Fine. He's your cousin-in-law, just as "Andrew", the man who married your sister, is your brother-in-law. Alex has a son from a previous marriage, Bruce. He's no relation to you. Alex's previous marriage (or fling) was with Barbara, now dead or divorced. Barbara is no relation to you either. Barbara has a son, Charles, who was the result of a marriage/fling with Daniel. Charles is WAY no relation to you. Your family certainly does a lot of coupling and uncoupling.
